Embarking on a study abroad journey is a significant decision that requires thorough planning and consideration. In my previous article, I highlighted a few reasons why studying abroad is beneficial. However, this article focuses on selecting the ideal study abroad program once you decide to go on this adventure. As someone who plans to study overseas, I always ask myself the following six questions, which can also help you find the perfect study abroad program.

WHERE DO YOU WANT TO STUDY?

This has always been my first and also most crucial question. Studying abroad allows you to live where you have always dreamed about. You can explore new cultures, learn new languages, or merely explore what this world offers.

When I first moved abroad, I chose to go to London to improve my English skills. While I could have gone to the USA or Australia, I have always been drawn to the British accent, which I find the best. I enjoyed the British lifestyle so much that I even contemplated returning to London for my first semester abroad. However, I decided to try something new and spent four months in Paris, which was a fantastic experience.

I am taking a massive step for my next semester abroad by again going overseas. Although I have lived in other countries before, this is a particularly exciting opportunity because I have always dreamed of living in New York City.

WHAT ARE YOUR EDUCATIONAL GOALS?

Studying abroad during a semester can help you discover your desired career path. When selecting courses to take abroad, choosing ones that align with your studies at home is essential. For instance, you have many options if you are pursuing a business degree. If you’re a musician, consider studying music in Vienna. Alternatively, you could explore fashion in Paris or finance in New York City. Personally, I am majoring in finance and plan to pursue a master’s degree in Financial Management. However, I am also passionate about fashion, so I took the opportunity to study Luxury Brand Management and Fashion Business courses during my study abroad program whenever possible.

WHICH PROGRAM IS BEST FOR YOUR?

Various universities are in different cities, and larger cities usually have more options. You can select a university that offers the specific courses you want to study. In some cases, universities may partner with other institutions in the same city, providing more flexibility. Additionally, it’s important to consider government programs that may be available. For instance, the ERASMUS program in Europe provides financial support to students each month, which can be a great benefit since living abroad can be costly.

PROFESSIONAL & SOCIAL CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

In today’s world, it’s common knowledge that gaining work experience is crucial for your future. Have you considered taking an internship after your semester abroad? This could be an opportunity for you to extend your stay in a new location, broaden your perspective by working in a different culture, and gain valuable experiences. Additionally, it will push you out of your comfort zone and enhance your social skills, as interning abroad is definitely a challenge worth taking on.

WHAT TYPE OF HOUSING DO YOU PREFER?

Moving out of your parent’s house for the first time can be a big step for many students. A few housing options are available, such as living on campus, renting a private apartment, or sharing one with others. When I was in London, I shared a flat with four girls from my school and even had two roommates in my bedroom. It was an excellent experience for me as an only child, as I’d never shared a living space for such a long time before. In Paris, I had my own apartment, which I thought I would prefer, but I also lived in a shared apartment where everyone had their own room. Surprisingly, this was my best living situation, as I became close friends with my two roommates. Ultimately, each option has pros and cons, and you’ll need to decide if you’re ready to live on your own or prefer to share your space.

CONSIDER COSTS INVOLVED

When considering studying abroad, the costs of the semester can be daunting. However, I assure you that the experience is well worth the investment. You can choose a more affordable destination based on the euro and dollar exchange rate or participate in an ERASMUS program. Additionally, reducing expenses, such as sharing an apartment instead of having a private residence, can help. This can also help you meet new people more easily. Ultimately, deciding where to study abroad is yours, and it is up to you to make the most of your time.

In summary, conducting thorough research and considering the questions mentioned is essential to discover the ideal study abroad program.
