Your Weekend Trip Guide to Lucerne, Switzerland
Chocolate, fondue, and luxury watches. These are all the thoughts that come to my mind when thinking about Switzerland. However, Switzerland has also a lot of beautiful landscapes and cities. Even though Switzerland is close to my hometown Stuttgart, I’ve never been to Switzerland before. Actually, I never heard of Lucerne before my mum mentioned that she would like to visit this city. Since the rest of the family didn’t mind where to go, we decided very quickly to make a short trip to Lucerne. We were all astonished by this little but very charming fairy tale city by the lake in Switzerland. I summarised all the places in Lucerne, which you need to see. Hence, here’s your weekend trip guide to Lucerne.
1. LAKE LUCERNE
Lucerne is characterised by its iconic lake and the mountains as a backdrop. Also known under the name Vierwaldstättersee, Lake Lucerne is acknowledged as one of Switzerland’s most beautiful lakes. I recommend you take a boat tour to enjoy the lake and the magnificent panorama view of the lake and the Swiss Alps.
2. CHAPEL BRIDGE
One of the most visited sights in Switzerland is the wooden covered bridge in Lucerne. This footbridge is also the oldest one of its kind in Europe. It was built in the 14th century. Nevertheless, it was once partly burned down and again had to be rebuilt again. The Chapel Bridge is known for the beauty of all the flowers, which line the sides of the bridge.
3. LION MONUMENT
Closed to the old city, you will find the lion monument surrounded by water and trees. It is a lion figure carved into the sandstone. The monument stands for honouring the Swiss guards who died during the French Revolution. The lion monument was built by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorwaldsen. The area is a very peaceful and calming place.
4. OLD CITY WALLS
Built around the city, the Museggmauer is a 14th-century old wall and tower structure. The ancient city walls run from the north bank of the Reuss to almost the north shore of Lake Lucerne. You can visit the wall for free. Moreover, there is also the possibility of entering and climbing up a few towers to get a great view over Lucerne.
5. LUCERNE OLD TOWN
Take a stroll through the old town of Lucerne. The streets are squares, all decorated with fountains and lined with colourful facades of medieval houses. You will find all kinds of shops in the old town of Lucerne.
If you are staying longer in Switzerland, then I really recommend you to visit the Interlaken area. About an hour away from Lucerne, you will find Iseltwald. The views are breathtaking. Besides, all Kdramas fans need to visit Interlaken since Crash Landing on You was filmed in the Interlaken area. Read the Crash Landing on You filming location guide for complete information about the spots. Otherwise, I wish you a lovely weekend in Lucerne and hope this guide to Lucerne will help you plan the best weekend.
