10 Reasons to Study Abroad

For two weeks, I thought about which topic will be my first post of 2018, and since studying abroad will be a massive part of my life this year, I decided to start 2018 with 10 reasons to study abroad.

This time it will be my second abroad semester, but it is actually my third time living abroad. I have already told you about my London Experiences, which was my gap year I took after high school graduation. For everyone who still has the chance to make a gap year, do it! Because this is the reason why you will regret if you don’t take one!

If you are like me and the time for your gap year is too late, but you still want to experience this incredible time, here are the 10 reasons to study abroad!

10 Reasons to Study Abroad | THE DAILY HAPPINESS

Most of the time students decide to study abroad overseas. Of course, you can always travel overseas as well, but if you think about it, it is so much easier if you already live on that mainland. For example, flights from Asian countries to a neighbouring country is so much cheaper than an overseas trip from Europe to Asia. The same goes for the United States or even Europe if you are not a citizen of this mainland. Take that opportunity to discover, travel and explore the world.

In some cases, it can also be a benefit for your education and moreover, for your college credits. Some university gives you a number of credits, which won’t be enough for a specific master degree somewhere else. Therefore, taking an additional abroad semester can provide you with these missing college credits.

On the other hand, there is also a chance of diversity in programmes. When it comes to business, there are a lot of different branches. From Marketing, over Consulting to Finance. The possibility seems to be endless. If you don’t know where to set your focus and majors yet, why don’t try out something new? As for me, I decided to choose my major in Finance, but I also love the Luxury Fashion industry. So in fact of this, I always take a course in this branch as well besides Finance.

Definitely one of my favourite reasons to study abroad! I made terrific friendships in London and Paris and thanks to my friends I met there, I had an unforgettable and incredible time. Friendsships, which you made abroad are so special because you are making memories of your overseas time together. You are exploring everything new together, helping each other in every situation and in the end, I mean, how lovely is it that you can say you have friends from all over the world?

Whether it is learning an entirely new language or just improving your language skills. Studying abroad gives you the opportunity to move to a country where you can practice that foreign language.

This was my main reason why I moved to London because if I hadn’t lived there, my English skills would be still awful. Trust me; it makes a huge difference if you just study a language in a classroom or if you are constantly using and speaking to natural speakers of it.

5.   I N D E P E N D E N C E

For the most of the people, studying abroad will be the first time moving to a foreign country or even moving out for the first time. Living on your own has a lot of responsibilities, which you have to fulfil. You are going to take care of grocery, cleaning, doing the laundry and cooking on your own.
Besides your living situation, you often have to find out how to get around in your new city on your own as well, where to find something and merely to manage how to live on your own. Through all these kind of tasks, you will get more independent. That’s also the reason why you should move away at least once!

6.   C U L T U R A L

Living abroad will give you an ultimate look on the inside of a different culture. The language, the food, the music, the values and so much more. You will also get a glimpse on a new culture by travelling but it makes a whole difference if you are actually live in another culture day by day and when you’re starting to adopt your new culture.

As for me, I am a girl with Asian roots but was born and raised in Germany. Therefore, I have always lived in two cultures. So when I lived in Paris, it was not that hard to adopt the French mentality anymore for example. I have to admit that I am getting on with the Europan culture more than the Asian one but since I am visiting Asia more often now, I think it is fascinating.

Besides the new cultural enrichment, you will also get a different view of your own culture. If you never experience something different, you will never know if you like something or dislike something from your own culture. But in general, from my experiences, people will adopt a mix of the different cultures and take the advantages of each one.

7.   S E L F   D I S C O V E R Y

Besides the new culture and language, you will definitely expand your interests as well. There are so many incredible things which the world has to offer. From new tastes of music or art to new hobbies. You will be surprised by yourself how studying abroad will expand your interests so much and by that how you will discover yourself. Furthermore, you are also going to learn where your strengths and weaknesses are.

From living in Paris, I found for myself that art isn’t that boring as I thought and I actually do really enjoy extended visits to museums. As long as it is the kind of art, which I like.
I also learned that one my weaknesses are definitely time management, which I was struggling a lot thanks to massive traffic in the capital of France or England. On the other hand, one of my strengths is how to handle my life on my own, even though I am living alone in an entirely new city. Everything is possible!

8.   I M P R O V I N G   C V

Nowadays you can never go wrong with a study abroad semester on your resume when it comes to applying for a job. Every job recruiter knows all the advantages of living and studying abroad. Whether it is your independence, your language skills, or your global awareness. There are so many skills and traits developed by studying abroad, which will be as an advantage. Also, you will have many amazing stories to tell.

9.   U L T I M A T E   T E S T

Besides, all the good reason for studying abroad, there are a lot of challenges as well. Living abroad, culture shock, homesickness, feeling lonely etc. All these things you are going to face when you decide to move to another country. Sometimes the challenges are more straightforward, sometimes a little bit more difficult. Even though I lived a few times abroad, I do still face some of these problems in the beginning. But trust me, if you are willing to take risks, you will probably not regretting it!

In the end, you have to decide for yourself if you enjoyed your time and made the most out of it, or if you just are not the type of living abroad. Which is by the way also fine as well! So studying abroad is definitely the ultimate test, and if you make the best out of it, it will lead you to my last reason to study abroad.

10.   G R O W   B E Y O N D   Y O U R   C O M F O R T   Z O N E

“Great things never came out from comfort zones!” “Take the risk or lose the chance” are the sayings. And if you think about it, you have to admit that things will never change if you are not willing to take risks. I can honestly tell you that studying abroad is a huge step, but it will be a chance to have on of the most incredible times of your life!

Get out of your comfort zone, explore and discover the world, dare to dream and go studying abroad! Let it make you the person you have been itching to become. Last but not least, take the chance of making yourself an unforgettable time!
